About Shelton

Shelton Gibbs IV, candidate for the 422nd District Court, is a son of Kaufman County, raised with the same ideals of hard work and gritty perseverance that have come to define its residents.

Shelton is a product of Terrell I.S.D. and graduated as valedictorian of Southwestern Christian College. Afterwards, he studied at Abilene Christian University and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Shelton then attended Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law and interned for Belo Corp., working in the legal department on various projects for the company’s 20 subsidiary television and print companies.

He came back home in June 2007 to work as Kaufman County’s Assistant District Attorney. During the last 12 years, Shelton has tried more than 65 jury cases to verdict, and he is currently the chief felony prosecutor for the 86th District Court.

Prosecuting some of Kaufman county’s most prolific criminals and high-profile cases, Shelton has built a reputation as a seasoned leader at the courthouse who is well respected amongst his peers and colleagues. His record of accountability, transparency, and fairness are essential to presiding over the bench.

Kaufman County raised Shelton to appreciate life outside the courtroom, so that he can more fairly rule in it. Shelton is married to Toni Francine Gibbs, a lifelong public-school educator, and together they are the parents of three children who attend Crandall ISD schools and are active in local youth sports.

Shelton served as a founding board member for the Crandall I.S.D. Education Foundation from 2014 through 2016. And as a fifth-generation Christian evangelist, he currently serves as a minister of the Lawrence and Marder Street Church of Christ in Dallas.

Judicial Philosophy

Whether rich or poor, Republican or Democrat, Plaintiff or Defendant, a judge must show favoritism to no one. Simply stated, partiality from a judge is wrong. The basis of this principle is rooted in James 2:1-13. The integrity of the law depends on judges who are committed to applying the law as written and to resisting the urge to legislate from the bench for the purpose of serving a political end.

I am a Constitutional conservative, and as our next District Court Judge my pledge to you is to provide a courtroom that is fair and balanced, and a justice system that rules on every case based on the facts and the rule of law, not based on a personal or political agenda. I will strive daily to give my best and to honor my oath of office to protect and defend our Constitution.
